Walking into a new gym can be an intimidating feat. Being a travel med tech, I’ve started at over 5 gyms in the last 2 years and I STILL sometimes get gymtimidation. It’s important to understand that you’re not alone in feeling this way, so I’ve compiled a list of tips to help get you through the gym doors and on your way to smashing your fitness goals!
#1- Research the gym
When I’m in a new location for work and looking for a new gym, the first thing I do is google ‘gyms near me’ and hop down the research rabbit hole. I look online at location, price, reviews, and their social media page. This gives you an idea of the size of the gym, equipment available, classes offered, and amenities.
#2- Try before you buy
Most gyms offer a free day pass or intro class for interested members. I ALWAYS take advantage of this if it’s offered. It gives you the chance to really scope out and see for yourself the equipment, locker rooms, amenities, and the overall atmosphere of the gym.
#3- First Workout
Make your first workout something you know you’re comfortable with. For me, my first workout is usually a shoulder day. This is because I can find a spot near the dumbbells, and can complete my entire workout from one spot in the gym. Then, while I’m there, I can still scope out all of the equipment without wandering around looking like the new girl. Another good first workout if you’re feeling overwhelmed, or if the gym is busy, is to just do cardio! Simply walk on the treadmill or do the stairmaster; don’t overthink it!
#4- Grab a workout buddy
One of the biggest ways to lessen gymtimidation is to bring a friend. Having someone you’re familiar with will make you more comfortable in a foreign atmosphere. This is also a good way to make sure you stay accountable to your goals!
#5- No one’s looking at you
As much as it might seem otherwise, no one’s looking at you. Most people at the gym are there to pursue their own goals and can’t be bothered to pay any attention to what you’re doing. Keep in mind that as a paying member, you have the right to be there just as much as the next person.
#6- Find your groove
Figure out what time you most enjoy going to the gym. If crowded gyms make you anxious, try going on the off hours (early mornings and evenings are usually the busiest). Find the workout split or class that you enjoy and has you looking forward to the gym. It’s easier to continue your fitness journey than it is to start one, so once you find the routine that works best for you, all that’s left is the execution!
